#SKYTRACBizAv – FANS 1/A and ATSC for Business Aviation

Business aviation has become increasingly popular, with over 22,000 business jets operating worldwide as of 2023.

This growing number of planes means airspace is becoming increasingly congested. Because of this, there is a great need for improved communication and safety systems. To help business aircraft coordinate flight planning, communication, and more, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has developed regulations for aircraft to follow.

These regulations enhance operator and passenger safety and improve crew and air traffic control communication, amongst other things.

There are several important factors in business aviation safety. Two of these are FANS 1/A (Future Air Navigation System) compliance and Air Traffic Services (ATS) safety services communication.

What is FANS 1/A Compliance?

The FANS 1/A mandate improves communication, navigation, surveillance, and air traffic management. Using satellite-based technology, it enhances business aircraft efficiency, safety, and capacity in oceanic and remote airspace.

Here are the key aspects of FANS 1/A equipment requirements and compliance:

Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Contract (ADS-C)

ADS-C automatically transmits aircraft position, speed, and other data to air traffic controllers. These transmissions enhance awareness in remote areas, improving safety for flight crews and passengers. It also aids efficient air traffic management and operational improvements, like optimized routing and flight paths.

Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC)

CPDLC provides a clear text-based communication method between pilots and air traffic controllers. The system uses a pre-defined set of messages, which reduces miscommunication. It also improves accuracy in understanding important instructions and information.

Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS)

ACARS is a digital data link system that transmits short messages between aircraft and ground stations. It sends flight plans, updates, and operational instructions between the aircraft and operations centers. ACARS enhances communication between operators and air traffic control, leading to improved safety and efficiency.

Latitude Technologies’ DL150 Satellite Data Unit

SKYTRAC’s Latitude Technologies offers the DL150 Satellite Data Unit, which complies with FANS 1/A.

The lightweight DL150 utilizes the Iridium Certus network to supply reliable data delivery anywhere on the planet. It ensures continued access to preferential North Atlantic Tracks (NAT) routes, is cost-effective, and has multiple STCs. These factors make the DL150 an ideal choice for equipping your aircraft with CPDLC, ADS-C, and ACARS and meeting FANS 1/A compliance.

What is Air Traffic Services (ATS) safety services communication?

ATS refers to the systems used by aircraft operators and air traffic controllers to exchange information and communicate. These systems include voice and data communication, emergency and distress communication, air traffic services tracking, and more. They are crucial for the safety, efficiency, and smooth operation of air traffic.

Latitude Technologies’ S200-012 for Safety Services SATVOICE

The S200-012 is a robust satcom system that meets ATS safety services communication requirements.

The S200-012 has several key features. These include worldwide coverage and clear voice communication, ATS priority calling and urgency-based direct overriding, and certification as a Long-Range Communication System. These capabilities ensure that pilots are connected to their Operational Control Centre and Air Traffic Services, wherever they are.
